The FetHead Germanium is a high quality in-line mic preamp. It provides a punchy, direct "largethan life" germanium sound for ribbon and dynamic mics, and adds classy germanium harmonics. The full, rich sound is reminiscent of vintage gear priced much higher. The desirable coloring of the FetHead Ge makes it a truly great addition to the neutral-sounding (Interface) preamplifier. Germanium transistors were widely used in early transistor designs by Neve, EMI, Telefunken, and Fairchild, and have developed a reputation for a distinctly vintage mojo that is still sought after today. To take full advantage of the "germanium" sound, and at the same time achieve the same sound quality as we know it, we created a novel hybrid circuit consisting of low-noise JFets and carefully selected "new old stock" germanium transistors. Some ribbon mics cannot withstand phantom power. The FetHead germanium circuit uses 48V phantom power, but protects it from the microphone and protects the microphone.
