Worth knowing:
The Spanish winter radish develops large round, dark coloured aromatic tubers with firm flesh and excellent storage quality. Its rich flavour is due to the mustard seed oil that is embedded in the storage tissue.
Natural Location:
The radish has its origin presumably in the eastern Mediterranean and in Asia.
Cultivation:
You can sow the spring and summer radish between April and the beginning of August, whereas autumn and winter radish should be sown between the beginning of July and the end of August. Summer radish also can be pre-cultivated from February on in a cool room on the windowsill or in a greenhouse. With radish varieties that develop long and straight tubers you should break up and loosen the soil a little bit deeper accordingly. Place the seeds with 25 to 30 cm space in between about 2 to 3 cm deep into seed furrows that are provided with some compost padding. Depending on the ground temperature, it will take two to three weeks until germination.
Place:
Like most vegetables, radish prefers a full-sunny place. It is very much suited for mixed cultivation along with carrots, tomatoes and beans.
Care:
Water the plant regularly, as with persistent dryness the tuber will cease to grow, become unsavoury and bitter, and the plant tends to shoot. With unevenly watering the tubers often become cracked. Hold back on fertilizing as radish has the peculiarity to take and store the nitrates. Radish is a rather undemanding plant. However, providing a cultivation guard net can be recommended, as radish is popular with cabbage flies and flea beetles.
During the winter:
Sow again in the next year.
