Speed and other characteristics remain unchanged; it only forms a conversion interface. It is transparent to the operating system and does not require any software drivers. U.3 is a tri-mode standard based on the U.2 specification and uses the same SFF-8639 connector. It integrates support for SAS, SATA, and NVMe into a single controller. When firmware support is available, U.3 can also support hot-swapping between different drives. U.2 drives are not compatible with U.3 hosts.
