CD1: 1-15. Part 1 / CD2: 1-12. Part 2 / 13-18. Part 3
Recorded live at the Herkulessaal, Munich, December 19-20, 2013
Composed between 1796 and 1798, this oratorio, "The Creation," was commissioned by the impresario Salomon. Haydn's captivating music is based on the libretto of the Old Testament's Book of Genesis and Milton's "Paradise Lost." Part 1 depicts the first four days of the Creation, with light emerging from chaos, angels dancing, and singing of the glory of God. Part 2 explores the fifth and sixth days. First, living creatures cover the earth and sky, and then humans are finally created. Finally, in Part 3, these created humans, Adam and Eve, take center stage. This is Haitink's third recording. His recent works are passionate performances that seem to incorporate all of his musical achievements and experience to date, and this majestic musical composition can only be described as having a "God's perspective." It's also noteworthy that the performance is energetic, belying his age of 84. The three soloists are also in top form, with much to listen for, including the recently acclaimed soprano Tilling's cool and composed Gabriel, Padmore's soft and full-bodied Uriel, and the young bass-baritone Müller-Brachmann, whose deep voice transcends his years. An exciting 100 minutes. Enjoy the birth of heaven and earth.
