Der Rosenkavalier directed by Kupfer. Featuring Welser-Möst and the Vienna Philharmonic, and a stellar cast including Stojanova, Groisböck, Koch, and Erdmann! Includes Japanese subtitles! This highly acclaimed production of Der Rosenkavalier, which debuted at the 2014 Salzburg Festival, is now available for purchase. 2014 marks the 150th anniversary of Richard Strauss's birth, and this performance featured a star-studded cast worthy of this memorial year. Conducted by Franz Welser-Möst, Der Rosenkavalier was already a familiar repertoire, and he demonstrated exceptional baton stability. Since Welser-Möst subsequently announced his resignation as music director of the Vienna State Opera, this performance is now a valuable record. Directed by the master Harry Kupfer, who has garnered attention in Japan for his numerous stage productions, he is said to have delivered a stunning production of Parsifal at the New National Theatre this year. This production is set in the early 20th century, with a simple stage set and the Vienna cityscape of the time projected as a backdrop. Compared to the previous 18th century-style "Der Rosenkavalier," the costumes and props are much more stylish. Also noteworthy is the superb casting. Crassimira Sto plays the role of the Marshal's wife.
Janova has an overwhelming presence. In the famous trio at the end of the third act, Stojanova's lead is reliable, and she exudes the same mature charm as her intelligent and proud character. Sophie Koch gives a superb performance as Octavian, and Mojca Erdmann is also perfectly suited to the lovely Sophie. Also noteworthy is Günter Groisböck, who sings Baron Ochs. Rather than the conventional image of an arrogant, lecherous man, he performs smartly and with a powerful voice. (King International)
