I am really pleased that Sejong University has published “Fundamentals of Korean Language and Culture,” a liberal arts Korean textbook for Korean language education for foreign students. Sejong University, which inherits the spirit of King Sejong the Great, who founded Hangul based on creative and scientific principles with a sense of compassion, has grown into a research-centered global university and is educating many foreign students, and I think the publication of “The Basics of Korean Language and Culture” is very significant and timely. In the past, which was quite difficult, we were envious by studying in many developed countries at the time and learning their languages and culture, but now Korean culture is also an object of envy, and it is easy to find foreigners at home and abroad who make great efforts to use Korean language and writing well. “Foundations of Korean Language and Culture” is the result of careful writing by six instructors, including Professor Jang Hyun-muk. Since the first liberal arts Korean course was established in the first semester of the 2014 academic year, it has been developed with a lot of thought and effort based on educational materials produced during the Korean language curriculum and passionate educational experiences. The topics were carefully selected and structured around grammar and activities in order to provide practical help to international students who are dealing with beginner Korean but are continuing their studies at university. We provide plenty of appropriate exercises, including explanations about Korean culture, so that foreign students can easily accept the Korean language.
