The word Piercing comes from the English "to pierce". The navel piercing (also referred to as a belly button piercing) is a piercing made on the edge of the navel. It is usually the upper part of the edge of the umbilicus which serves as a support for the piercing, the position of the piercing nevertheless depends on the creativity of the piercer. The navel piercing is nowadays mostly worn by women. Lip piercings can be placed anywhere around the mouth, but the surface of the lip is usually not pierced on its own, except for horizontal lip piercings. Piercings in specific positions have certain names. Monroe piercings, for example, are piercings worn on the upper lip where Marilyn Monroe had her famous beauty mark. Medusa piercings go through the center of the upper lip (the philtrum), perpendicular to the tissue. Labret piercings can be pierced in the center or on the side of the lip (offset labret piercing). Vertical labret piercings go through the center of the lower lip, parallel to the tissue. The variation is called the vertical lowbret, which starts inside the mouth between the lower lip and the teeth and travels straight down out of the lower edge of the jaw. Horizontal piercings are rare and include a horizontal bar on the lower lip that crosses the surface of the lip. An arch piercing is a relatively common type of surface piercing. It is a visible perforation in the face that pierces the skin at the level of the brow bone. The arch piercing is generally a barbell, a micro-banana, and/or a ring with a diameter of 1.2 mm placed vertically over the eyebrow.
