ST Microelectronics' VL53L0X is a time-of-flight ranging system integrated into a compact module.
The VL53L0 uses ST's FlightSense technology to measure the time it takes for an emitted infrared laser pulse to reach a near-object and reflect back to the detector, so it can be considered a small, self-contained LiDAR system. This time-of-flight (TOF) measurement makes it possible to determine the absolute distance to the target without the reflectivity of the object significantly affecting the measurement. The sensor can report distances up to 2 m (6.6 ft) with a resolution of 1 mm, but its effective range and accuracy (noise) are heavily dependent on the environmental conditions and target characteristics (e.g., reflectivity and size) as well as the sensor configuration. (The accuracy of the sensor is specified as good from ±3% to over ±10% under poor conditions.)
The measurement range is provided via the sensor's I2C (TWI) interface, which is also used to configure the sensor settings, and the sensor provides two additional pins: shutdown input and interrupt output.
The VL53L0X is an excellent IC, but its small leadless LGA package makes it difficult for the average student or hobbyist to use. It also operates at the recommended voltage of 2.8 V, which can make it difficult to interface with microcontrollers operating at 3.3 V or 5 V. Our breakout board solves these problems, making it easier to get started with the sensor while keeping the overall size as small as possible.
PIN Description:
VDD regulated 2.8 V output. Almost 150 mA can be used to power external components. (To bypass the internal regulator, use this pin as a 2.8 V input and disconnect VIN).
VIN This is the primary 2.6 V to 5.5 V supply connection. SCL and SDA level shifters pull the I2C line up to this level.
GND The ground (0 V) connection for the power supply. Your I2C control source also shares a common ground with the board.
SDA level shifter I2C data lines: HIGH for VIN, LOW for 0 V
SCL level shifted I2C clock line: HIGH is VIN, LOW is 0 V
XSHUT This pin is a low active shutdown input; by default, the board pulls it up to VDD to enable the sensor. Driving this pin low puts the sensor into hardware standby. No level shifting is performed on this input.
