Latin name:
Nymphaea Marliacea “Albida”
Family:
Nymphaeaceae
General features:
Aquatic, perennial, rustic plant.
Nymphaea is a group of medium-sized water lilies, with leaves 10-20 cm wide and covering a surface area of 0.8-1 m2.
The leaves and flowers form from a large rhizome with strong roots.
The leaves are floating, rounded, light green in colour, shiny.. When they become too dense they become heavy and remain submerged.
It is a very floriferous variety: the flowers are scented, white with yellow stamens, on average 15 cm wide.
The flowers have the typical cup shape with multiple sets of petals.; the outermost ones when the flower is open, are horizontal.
Multiplication is carried out in April-May: The plants are removed from the water, robust portions of the rhizomes, 15-20 cm long, are cut, the roots are shortened and they are replanted.
Cultivation:
For a balanced development, Nymphaea Alba should be placed in a place where it receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight.
Plant it in early April when the water begins to warm up., (if the water is too cold the system will go into a dormant state) at a depth between 30 and 100 cm.
When grown at or below the recommended depths, the leaves and rhizomes rapidly thicken.
They can be planted either directly on the bottom of the basin or in perforated containers.
After planting they do not require any special care.. The leaves that remain submerged are eliminated, especially at the end of the growing season, to avoid rotting of the plant material.
If they are grown in very small tanks they should be periodically thinned out. (see multiplication).
Diseases Parasites Adversities:
This, like other water lilies, can be affected by aphids. In this case the young leaves and flower stems can suffer malformations; the flowers may be discolored or may not even open.
In these cases it can be useful to push the leaves under water with a net, even for 24 hours.. The insects will be eaten by the fish.
