The active subwoofer AQ Wega 54 MKIII is integrated into a sound box made of a combination of MDF and particleboard panels. For accurate reproduction of the lowest frequencies, excellent cabinet stiffness, good tuning, and a high-quality power amplifier with an active crossover are required. Therefore, in Wega 54 MKIII, a well-thought-out baffle design is used in conjunction with a 10-inch bass speaker from the well-known brand PEERLESS and an active module of our own production. The speaker features an exceptionally large diaphragm excursion and a powerful magnetic circuit. It has high sensitivity, allowing it to generate the necessary acoustic pressure. To increase the stiffness of the enclosure, the Wega 54 MKIII uses an active vibration damping system BDS in the layered top plate. Bass reflex in the shape of the letter Y. Thanks to this unique concept, it can have a greater length, and at the same time the walls of the bass reflex form part of the reinforcement of the resonance box. The electronic crossover and power amplifier are housed in a separate, closed chamber. Its controls allow for setting the crossover frequency, adjusting input sensitivity, and switching the phase. The integrated automatic standby function can be disabled. From the physiology of sound perception by the human ear it follows that for the same sensation of loudness at low frequencies a significantly greater power is required than that sufficient for medium and high frequencies. The lowest frequency is also proportional to the size of the speaker diaphragm and the internal volume of the enclosure. Smaller speakers are physically unable to reproduce the lowest bass. The solution is to add an active subwoofer – a special speaker that reproduces only the lowest bass frequencies in the reproduction path. Here again, acoustics and the physiology of sound perception by the human ear play a role. The ear very accurately perceives the direction from which sounds of higher frequency come. The survival of our ancestors depended on whether they heard where a snake was hissing and where leaves were rustling under a beast. High frequencies propagate in the form of a narrow beam, at medium frequencies that already narrow beam turns into a cone, and low bass frequencies propagate spherically. This means that for low bass, reaching up to about 100 Hz, we are unable to determine where it comes from. The moment we place classic full-range speakers in front of the listener (main), a subwoofer np. for the listener, with proper setup, the ear will perceive the space near the main speakers in front of the listener as the source of sound. This same effect is used in multi-channel home theater systems and can be equally well utilized for stereo listening in cases where it is technically not possible to place large speakers in front of the audience. Modern amplifiers count on this solution, they are equipped with a special signal output for the subwoofer, where the entire bass line from the entire recording is summed up in one sound channel. The solution with an active subwoofer is also beneficial in that the power of the main amplifier is not as heavily loaded, and the active crossover in the subwoofer compensates for the inherent frequency response of the subwoofer and enclosure.
