#A beautiful art book featuring colorful artworks by Daryl Chihuly.
The most famous glass artist since Louis Comfort Tiffany, Dale Chihuly is known for elevating blown glass from delicate ornamental objects to groundbreaking fine art. Chihuly's "Blanket Cylinders," "Seafoam," "Persian," and chandeliers have been exhibited and collected around the world, and many books have been published about his bold, intricate, and intensely colorful works. However, what is rarely documented, despite being crucial to understanding his art, is the role that physical space plays in his overall aesthetic: installation space, workspace, but also space for living and to house his vast personal collection. Chihuly: Through the Looking Glass focuses on the artist's works and installations in relation to the spaces that produced, shaped, and surrounded them. Interweaving critical commentary with Chihuly's own commentary (many of which were solicited specifically for this book), the text offers a new entry point into the work, mind, and creative process of one of America's most critically and popular artists.
Born in 1941, Dale Chihuly studied interior design and architecture before starting his career as a glassblower. After earning a degree in sculpture and ceramics, he worked for a glassmaker on the island of Murano in Venice. After returning to the United States, he founded the glass program at the Rhode Island School of Design in 1968 and co-founded the Pilchuck Glass School in 1971. In 1979, Chihuly himself stopped blowing glass after losing his sight, but he continues to maintain the artistic direction of the studio.
