- Title: CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPE From the Horizon of Postmodern Design
- Contents:
In 1969, the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, held "Modern Design Perspectives," a look back at the history of postwar modern design innovation in Japan. Since then, however, global architectural and design concepts and practices have undergone drastic changes, with various proposals and experiments continuing to emerge while deeply intertwined with contemporary social conditions and the spirit of the times. Contemporary design and architectural activities can, in a sense, be described as the most cutting-edge application of postmodernist issues at the forefront of contemporary knowledge. This exhibition aimed to examine the contemporary and postmodern conditions we face while focusing on the issues of contemporary design and architecture.
This exhibition featured 199 works and office plans by 48 artists from Europe, America, and Japan, showcasing diverse approaches to the postmodern condition, including relativism, regionalism, and historicism, through concrete forms and spaces. Modern architecture, which has dominated our lives and even our social systems since the 1920s, is currently facing various criticisms. Many of the artists featured in this exhibition are architects and designers who have been engaged in critical practice since the late 1960s, not simply criticizing modern design but also engaging in deeper social and historical considerations. Tracing their work reveals that the issue of postmodernism in architectural design is a historical necessity, going beyond mere stylistic trends to deeply connect with fundamental issues shared by all contemporary situations. It is a reexamination of modernism in a broad sense, which could be considered the zeitgeist of the 20th century, and a question of its critical inheritance. In this sense, this exhibition encompasses issues closely related to the current state of art.
