Love You Tokyo
Nobuyoshi Araki & Kineo Kuwabara
This book, published in conjunction with the "Love You Tokyo" exhibition held at the Setagaya Art Museum in 1993, is a collaboration between renowned Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki and Kineo Kuwabara, who was active not only as a photographer but also as a critic and editor.
Kuwabara, who has served as editor-in-chief of numerous photography magazines, including Camera Geijutsu, Quarterly Photography Eizo, and Photography Criticism, recognized Nobuyoshi Araki's talent early on and introduced his work to the magazine. Kuwabara was childhood friends with Hiroshi Hamaya and, influenced by him, continued to take photographs, but he did not actively exhibit them. One day, when he showed Araki some photos he had taken by chance, Araki was so taken aback that he immediately took the negatives and made contacts in his own darkroom. This led to Kuwabara's first solo exhibition, "Tokyo 1930-1940," in 1973.
Kuwabara's masterpiece, "Tokyo 1936," is a book that may not have existed without Araki; it is a wonderful exhibition and catalog that transcends the role of photography critic and is born of the love, trust, and respect between photographers.
This photo book was sold at the "Love You Tokyo" Kuwabara Koshio & Araki Nobuyoshi Photography Exhibition in 1993.
