Brand Introduction
[OUTDOOR PRODUCTS]
Outdoor Products was founded in 1973 by the Altschul brothers in Los Angeles, USA.
The brothers' shop was originally the first department store on the West Coast, selling military surplus and camping gear, and even had the facilities to repurpose military tarps into camping tents and backpacks.
One day, they suddenly realized that while they had a wide selection of equipment useful for skiing, canoeing, and mountain climbing, there was nothing for those involved in these activities that they could use on a daily basis.
At the time, there were no products on the market that they could confidently recommend for everyday use to those who knew what they were buying.
So, using equipment previously used to remake military tarps, they began making Outdoor Products bags.
Because of this background, the initial shop's selection was a strange one, with backpacks, sleeping bags, gaiters, rain ponchos, and other items lined up in a seemingly random fashion.
Because they had long respected and dealt in the finest gear, they didn't try to develop products that would compete with those brands, instead focusing on everyday items that those brands hadn't touched.
Eventually, Outdoor Products' production volume increased, and the number of employees grew as well, but with the rise of the labor union movement in the mid-1970s, labor costs per person continued to rise.
The only solution was to simplify the process for each product, and the design that was created became the basic style of Outdoor Products' simple daypacks that remains to this day.
While essentially constructed with two pieces and minimal sewing, these daypacks, made with durable Cordura fabric and YKK zippers, were sold in university co-ops across the United States by the mid-1980s, along with similarly simple Boston bags.
Their stripped-back design easily complements any fashion and age group, and they soon became a favorite among many Americans.
Today, Outdoor Products bags are popular and used in over 60 countries around the world.
The birth of the Outdoor Products daypack was heavily influenced by the circumstances of America's period of rapid economic growth.
