[From Wikipedia] "The Fir Tree Remains" is a historical novel by Shugoro Yamamoto. It is based on the "Date Disturbance," a family feud that occurred within the Date clan of the Sendai domain in the early Edo period.

Harada Kai (Harada Munesuke), traditionally portrayed as a villain, is the protagonist, and the novel offers a new interpretation, portraying him as a loyal retainer who worked hard to protect the domain from elimination by the Edo Shogunate. Comprised of four parts, the story is interspersed with numerous fragments depicting the secret conversations between Date Hyobu (Date Munekatsu), who is plotting to take over the domain, and his confidant, Nizuma Hayato.
