About Usaburo Kokeshi
【Kokeshi is the Forest.】
Usaburo Kokeshi is located in Shinto Village, Gunma Prefecture, a region rich in nature.
The wood used for our kokeshi dolls is all collected from the mountains of Gunma Prefecture. By using mature trees, we promote forest regeneration and play a part in maintaining the lush, green rural landscape.
Kokeshi dolls are a rebirth of the forest; a gift from nature.
【Kokeshi: Skill】
Carving, layered burning lines, shading and shading, gentle eyes.
Using kokeshi-making techniques passed down from previous generations, we gently depict the simple beauty of the Japanese people. Kokeshi dolls are a craft of skill. We blend tradition and innovation, breathing life into the wood.
【Kokeshi: Wishes】
The origins of kokeshi dolls date back to the Edo period. They are said to have been created to express wishes for physical and mental recovery, abundant harvests, and the healthy growth of children.
The desire for daily happiness and peace remains the same today. May feelings of blessing and encouragement reach your loved ones through kokeshi dolls. Kokeshi dolls are the embodiment of wishes. They are amulets that accompany you in your daily life.
【Kokeshi dolls are about connection.】
Sometimes, "that person" pops into your mind, and you wonder how they are doing. A kokeshi doll can give you such a moment.
The person who gave it to you. Your child in their early days. Family members living far away. Your past self. Memories woven through kokeshi dolls are revived across time and space. Kokeshi dolls are about connections between people. They are memories of warmth.
First Generation | Usaburo Okamoto
Founder of Usaburo Kokeshi. Born in Shinto Village, Gunma Prefecture in 1917 (Taisho 6).
After working with crafts made from artificial stone and metal, he began manufacturing kokeshi dolls in 1950 (Showa 25).
Soon after, in addition to the brush painting that was mainstream at the time, he developed three-dimensional expression techniques using carving and pyrography, laying the foundation for the Usaburo Kokeshi dolls that we see today.
He dedicated himself to research to prevent wood cracking, successfully incorporating woods previously considered unsuitable for processing into kokeshi dolls. His masterpiece, "Kantsubaki" (winter camellia), featuring his beloved camellia flower on beautiful zelkova wood, was the honor of being purchased by Emperor Showa.
Since establishing a mass production system combining handcrafting and machinery in 1979, he grew his workshop into the nation's leading kokeshi production center, remaining active throughout his life until his passing at the age of 91 in July 2009.
