Chusen dyeing is a type of stencil dyeing that uses a stencil called a "chugata," and is also called "pouring dyeing" because the dye is poured into the patterned areas. Chusen dyeing is a unique Japanese dyeing technique that allows for dyeing the front and back of the fabric to be exactly the same color, and by utilizing the blurring and mixing of dyes, it is possible to create elegant, deep, and diverse colors. Chusen dyeing is a technique where dye is "poised" onto the fabric. Dye is poured into layers of folded fabric using a special kettle with a narrow spout. The poured dye is then sucked up from below by a compressor, dyeing each layer of fabric down to the individual threads. By pouring different colors or waters simultaneously, it is possible to create color blends and blurs, which gives the finished product its soft appearance. The biggest difference between silkscreen-printed tenugui (Japanese hand towels), which are commonly found in inexpensive hand towels, and chusen-dyed tenugui is their superior water absorption and breathability. Because the dye permeates each individual fiber, air can pass between the threads, allowing the pattern to be expressed without compromising the breathability inherent in the fabric itself. 100% cotton, length approximately 1m.
