This is a rare checkered pattern tatami mat (only at the edges). Simply laying this tatami mat will refresh your tatami room. Use it to refresh sun-damaged tatami or as a cover to protect new tatami mats from staining. Using proprietary technology, the manufacturer modified the loom to create a checkered pattern using only the natural color and weave of the material. This tatami mat is recommended for those who find plain tatami mats lacking in individuality and desire a more luxurious tatami mat. It uses domestically grown rush grass (Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture, a major rush-producing area) approximately 115-120 cm in length. Approximately 95 cm of this length is used. The edges typically have a strong white tinge. (This is not due to sun damage, but rather to the color of the base and tip of the rush.) The checkered pattern is achieved by taking advantage of the difference in color between the base and tip of this rush grass. (Therefore, the checkered pattern only appears within the white area at the base; the center is plain.) The longer the rush, the more luxurious it is. The tips of the rush grass are reddish-brown, the base is white, and the center is blue (green). We use domestically grown rush grass (Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture). Each strand of domestic rush grass is thick, has a thick outer skin, and fine fibers, making it resilient and durable. Rush grass is known for its air-purifying properties, humidity-regulating properties, and stain resistance. The manufacturer's proprietary technology applies "hiba essence," extracted from hiba trees in Aomori Prefecture, to the fabric surface. Hiba essence contains hinokitiol, a naturally occurring substance with extremely high antibacterial properties. (It has more antibacterial and deodorizing properties than untreated products.)
