With four-wheel drive and high ground clearance, the Ford F30 seemed the obvious choice for patrol trucks. However, the added weight of four-wheel drive and high fuel consumption (almost twice that of a Chevrolet truck) caused these vehicles to have many problems. It was discovered that the Ford engines were very susceptible to the effects of sand, and the trucks began to require excessive amounts of oil after a relatively short period of service, so more and more Fords were abandoned, and eventually all remaining F30s were replaced with Chevrolet 30CWTs in March 1942. LRDG Fords typically had their hoods and cabs removed and the condenser mounted on the running board for improved cooling.
