Kokeshi dolls are a symbol of human connection. A memory of warmth. First Generation | Usaburo Okamoto Founder of Usaburo Kokeshi. Born in Shinto Village, Gunma Prefecture in 1917 (Taisho 6). After working with artificial stone and metal crafts, I started manufacturing kokeshi dolls in 1950. Soon after, in addition to the brush painting technique that was prevalent at the time, he developed three-dimensional expressive methods such as carving and pyrography, laying the foundation for the Usaburo kokeshi dolls that we see today. He dedicated himself to research to prevent wood from cracking, and succeeded in incorporating woods previously considered unsuitable for processing into kokeshi dolls. His masterpiece, "Kantsubaki" (winter camellia), made from the beautiful grain of zelkova wood and adorned with his favorite camellia flower, was the honor of being purchased by Emperor Showa. Since establishing a mass production system combining handcrafting and machinery in 1979, the workshop grew to become the number one producer of kokeshi dolls in Japan, and the owner remained active throughout his life until his passing in July 2009 at the age of 91.
