Worth knowing:
Even today, every farmer knows about the common silverweed because for a long time it was considered an emergency aid for all injuries to pets and people. The herbaceous, small, perennial plant grows 5 to 15 cm in height and forms a thickened, short rhizome from which the very thin plant stems that travel around the ground develop. Its golden yellow flowers appear from May to September. The old tradition of digging up silverweed roots on St. John's Day before sunrise is almost forgotten. It was believed that the wearer of an amulet that was made from these silverweed roots collected that day could win the love of other people.
Natural Location:
The nutrient-rich soils of the northern hemisphere is where the silverweed has its natural habitat. It is mainly found on grassy areas as well as around creeks and ponds.
Cultivation:
You may sow the silverweed in spring or autumn without any special measures. Cultivation in a pot: choose a big pot right from the start so the roots can spread well. The propagation should take place in a shaded location on the balcony or patio. Outdoor cultivation: if you want to harvest the first stalks in spring, you will need to plant the seeds latest by previous autumn. Make sure to pick a shaded place with permeable soil and cover the seeds with a thin layer of earth (about 0.5 cm). Pay attention to an even water supply to the substrate during the germination phase.
Place:
Choose a sunny location on the balcony or in the garden.
Care:
The common silverweed requires no special care. Harvest: Cut the stalks and make bundles, but always leave a good amount of stalks still standing. You can either hang the bundled stalks upside down in a well ventilated place for drying or you can remove the leaves and dry them in the oven at not more than 35° Celsius with the door slightly open.
During the winter:
Silverweed is winter-hardy and stays in the ground.
